In this first episode of Papaw Stan’s RC Racing Series, I introduce my grandson to the basics of RC racing and explain what chassis tuning really means.
We talk about:
finding balance in a racecar
how a car behaves going into and out of a corner
why even tiny tuning changes make a big difference
what “tight” and “loose” handling means
and how to understand the four parts of every racetrack
This entire series is designed to be simple, fun, and easy for kids—and perfect for parents and grandparents learning with them.
🎬 Transcript: “Grandson, Let Papaw Show You RC Racing — Episode 1”
“Alright buddy… come here for a second. Papaw wants to show you something that means a whole lot to me.”
“You see this little racecar right here? Now, this ain’t just some toy from Walmart. This little thing works just like the big cars you see at the racetrack. Shocks, springs, tires, weight, the whole deal.”

What We’re Starting Today
“I’m gonna start teaching you how all this works. Not to make you the fastest kid out there… but so you can understand your car, really feel it.
And if you decide you wanna race one day, you’ll already be way ahead.”
What Chassis Tuning Really Means
“You ever ride your bike when the tires are low? Feels goofy, right? You ain’t got control like you should.
Well, these RC cars are the same way. To make ’em drive good, we tune the chassis. That just means we make tiny little changes to help it handle better.”
What BALANCE Means
“You’re gonna hear me say this a lot: Balance.
That’s the big one.
If the front won’t turn — that’s called tight.
If the back end wants to spin around — that’s loose.
But when it’s balanced… buddy, that car’ll just glide through the corner. Feels like it’s on rails.”

Murfdogg’s Wisdom
“Now listen… Matt ‘The Murfdogg’ Murphy, he’s one of the smartest guys in RC racing.
He says everybody likes their car a little different. And he’s right.
You don’t gotta drive like me. You don’t gotta copy anybody else.
We’re gonna tune your car to fit you — your hands, your eyes, your style.”

Understanding the Track
“To tune a car, you gotta know what it's doing on the track.
The track’s got four parts, kinda like four rooms in a house.”
Corner Entry — you’re just starting to turn.
Mid Corner — the car is leaned over the most.
Corner Exit — you’re giving it gas coming out.
Straightaway — letting it eat, building speed, and getting ready for the next turn.
“You learn what the car’s doing in each room… and Papaw can help you fix it.”
The Tools We’ll Use Later
“I ain’t gonna throw all this at you today. But these are the tools we’ll use down the road.”
“We’ll learn these one by one, little steps. Ain’t no rush.”
Why Papaw’s Really Teaching You
“Buddy… I wanna tell you something.”

I want us to have things we do together.
